a passing shadow
2014

We are like a puff of wind, our days are like a passing shadow.
Psalm 144:4
My artistic practice centers on the experience of movement through space and the shifting landscapes encountered during travel. By observing the scenery outside the window while riding public transportation, I translate fleeting views into memory and imagination, which are then developed through a large number of sketches and paintings.
This site-specific project, created in Taitung, draws from the bodily sensation of swaying inside a tour bus and frames the view through the vehicle’s window as a moving lens. I observed the subtle shifts of light and shadow in motion, using 100 sheets of 10 x 27 cm tracing paper as the basis for my sketches. The translucent and slightly blurred quality of the tracing paper allows for a layered accumulation, gradually constructing an imagined landscape shaped by memory. From this stack of 100 overlaid sheets, I selected and reassembled fragments to form a new composition on canvas.
This work continues my exploration of drawing from memory and further develops key visual elements in my painting practice—layering, transparency, and the residual traces left behind by overlapping images and the passage of time.
